Install Protected Bike Lanes on Valencia south of 23rd Street
.png)
Valencia Street south of 23rd Street is a critical route of people going north and south, but has paint-only, unprotected bike lanes that make the street unsafe for all people—especially children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities—and discourage people from shifting trips from cars to bikes and scooters, which leads to increased car traffic, demand for car parking, noise, air pollution, roadway fatalities and injuries, less revenue for local businesses, and climate emissions.
These paint-only, unprotected bike lanes have remained in place even as the City installed the center bikeway on Valencia between 15th and 23rd Streets then replaced the center bikeway with curbside, parking-protected bikeways (thanks to the supporters of the Better Valencia campaign). This section of Valencia Street is also on the City's "High-Injury Network"—the 12% of streets where 68% of severe and fatal roadway crashes occur, making it a high priority for the City to make safer for all people.
It's time for Valencia Street to have curbside protected bikeways for the entire length of the street. Curbside protected bikeways will make Valencia safer for all people, decrease car traffic, demand for car parking, noise, air pollution, roadway crashes, and climate emissions while increasing revenue for local businesses and quality of life for people who live on or near Valencia Street. SFMTA even has a full design for Valencia between 23rd and Cesar Chavez Streets that went through exhaustive process and public outreach in 2019 and 2020 that can be slightly modified and improved and implemented immediately using "quick-build" materials (e.g. plastic posts, speed bumps, and paint).
