Accountability and Systemic Change in NYS Prisons Now!

Governor Kathy Hochul

FYI FOLKS IN NYS!!! Sign and share! ALSO, you’re able to add the names of your loved ones who have been abused or killed in our jails and prisons in the comments of the petition.

In light of the recent and brutal death of Robert Brooks at the hands of correction officers at Marcy Correctional Facility, Governor Hochul and the US Department of Justice must step in to conduct a top to bottom review of physical and mental abuse of those incarcerated in New York State Jails and Prisons as well as:

  • Immediately fire and deny pensions to everyone involved in the murder of Robert Brooks or who watched and did nothing to stop the abuse.
  • Automatic recording on all body cams and immediately fire anyone who disables or disengages their body cam.
  • Pass the Second Look Act, Earned Time Act, Youth Justice and Opportunities Act, Right 2 Remain Silent Act, Elder Parole, Fair and Timely Parole, Treatment Not Jails, End Qualified Immunity and Marvin Mayfield Act to overhaul New York’s racist and unjust sentencing laws and bring our loved ones home.
  • Pass Rights Behind Bars, which addresses longstanding human rights, including restoring care packages, enhancing visits with loved ones, stopping violations of the HALT solitary law, addressing officer brutality, and more.
  • Conduct a thorough independent investigation of all incidences and accusations of abuse in DOCCS prisons and create an independent oversight board that includes incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
While accountability must include the firing of those who murdered Robert Brooks, it cannot stop there. Robert Brooks’ murder is not an isolated incident—it epitomizes a system that thrives on perpetual punishment. New York's sentencing laws have fueled mass incarceration and torn Black and brown families apart for generations, leading to over 30,000 people languishing in these violent institutions. By orienting our prison system towards endless punishment rather than transformation, our current sentencing laws seed more violence and harm.
