Boost Access to Mental Health Care in MI
Michigan Legislature
For too many Michigan residents, mental health and substance use treatments are out of reach.
Health plans routinely decline to cover treatments that are prescribed for patients, putting essential services out of reach, or cutting them short just when they’re needed most.
This is a crisis that must be addressed, and quickly.
The Mental Health Access Act (HB 4707), now moving through the state Legislature, ensures people can access the services and supports that are medically necessary for their recovery. Here’s how the bill works:
It requires health plans to cover medically necessary mental health or substance use disorder treatment.
Health plans would be prohibited from limiting coverage to short-term symptom reduction for chronic conditions, ending cycles of relapse and costly emergency department visits and hospitalizations.
The bill also requires health insurance plans to provide out-of-network care at no extra charge if no in-network provider is available to address a patient's condition.

YES! I support efforts to ensure people facing mental health and substance use conditions can get the help they need. I ask our state’s policy leaders to adopt the Michigan Health Access Act (HB 4707) without delay.
