Call for stronger protection for trees in Kirklees

Will Simpson councillor for a Greener Kirklees at Kirklees Council

In 2019 Kirklees council declared a climate emergency and said they would consider the environmental impact of all their decisions.

And they also said they would plant more trees.

Since a mature tree absorbs about 6000 times more carbon than a sapling we ask that they  also prioritise the conservation of our existing trees.

Many Kirklees trees are threatened by the local plan while thousands have already been felled since a climate emergency was declared by the council, often with very little justification. It seems that the council does not value our trees and does little to protect them, prioritise their conservation or raise awareness of their value in gardens, on our streets and in our parks, farmland and other green spaces.

We ask that Kirklees :
1. Make an audit of our remaining landscape and street trees
2. Strive to conserve as many of these as possible
3. Keep account of tree felling they sanction
4. Launch a campaign to inform Kirklees residents of the value of all trees (even young ones) in terms of landscape, wildlife habitat and carbon capture.
5. Require planning permission to fell or prune any tree of 10 years or over and take a conservative approach to granting planning permission.
6. Manage our existing woodlands to encourage understorey development and natural regeneration
7. Deter people from harming trees with Tree Protection Orders by acting promptly to reports of imminent felling and enforcing stricter penalties.
8. Take positive steps to raise awareness within our communities of the value of all our trees.
9. Stipulates that a minimum stand-off distance for all new development in the vicinity of existing woodland is created - 20 m or more from the end of the gardens - and does more to prevent tipping of garden waste and encroachment by householders.
10. Take positive steps to protect threatened species and raise awareness within our communities of the value of all our trees (even young ones) in terms of landscape, amenity, wildlife habitat and carbon capture.
