Just Say No to Trump's Compact for Academic Extortion
J. Larry Jameson, President, University of Pennsylvania; Ramanan Raghavendran, Chair, University of Pennsylvania Board of Trustees
UPDATE (October 16): President Jameson announced earlier today that Penn will not sign the Compact! Thank you to all who made their voices heard. As was made clear by this petition, the recent Faculty Senate Resolution, and many other acts opposition, the Penn community is strongly united against threats to our academic freedom and shared governance. This success is evidence that when we stand together, we have the power to shape the future of our university.
UPDATE (October 7): This petition and the accompanying statement urging the administration to say no to the Compact are co-sponsored by GETUP-UAW and RAPUP-UAW. All members of the campus community are encouraged to sign the petition and to come together on October 17th at 3pm to stand publicly against the Compact (details forthcoming).
On October 1st, the University of Pennsylvania was one of nine targets of the Trump Administration's "Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education." Through it, Trump asks once again for universities to either adopt his ideologically-extremist positions or face the loss of federal funding. Tell Penn's leadership that there is nothing to be gained by signing away the rights of its students, faculty and staff: the right to free speech, the right to teach and to learn without government interference, the right for students around the world to study in the U.S., and the right of the people of the University to be the ones making the decisions about its future.
Read the Statement of the AAUP-Penn Executive Committee here and sign this petition if you agree that the administration should say No to the compact!

We, the signers of this petition, endorse the statement of the AAUP-Penn Executive Committee and call on you as leaders of the University of Pennsylvania to categorically reject the Compact for Excellence in Higher Education. Penn's backroom deals with the Trump administration and its earlier concessions to threats have, as predicted, simply emboldened the administration to come back for more. We call on the University to pursue other measures to combat possible funding restrictions, like temporarily raising the rate of spending on the endowment and collaborating with other institutions to pursue legal remedies for the restoration of unconstitutionally withheld funds. Sacrificing our values irreparably damages the fabric of our University. Penn’s Latin motto, Leges Sine Moribus Vanae, translates to "Laws Without Morals are Useless." It is time to put that principle into practice.
