Protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

Our Elected Representatives

The Consumer Financial Protections Bureau (CFPB) has long been a vital safeguard for student loan borrowers; standing between them and servicers who routinely put profits over people.

Yet, recent attacks on the CFPB are threatening to strip away these protections, leaving millions of borrowers vulnerable to exploitation, undue harm, and injustice.

To Our Elected Representatives,

We, the undersigned, stand firmly in defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and its critical role in protecting student loan borrowers and other consumers from predatory practices. Recent attacks on the CFPB threaten to dismantle one of the most effective watchdogs between borrowers and financial exploitation.

Since its inception, the CFPB has been a powerful advocate for student loan borrowers, holding servicers and lenders accountable while ensuring fair treatment for millions of Americans pursuing higher education. The Bureau's track record includes:

Returning Over $5 Billion to Student Loan Borrowers: The CFPB’s enforcement actions have led to billions in relief for student borrowers who were misled, overcharged, or unfairly treated by lenders and servicers.

Exposing Predatory Practices and Permanently Banning Bad Actors: The Bureau uncovered widespread abuses by companies like Navient, one of the largest student loan servicers, which was found to have pushed borrowers into costly forbearance instead of affordable repayment plans. Last year, the agency permanently banned Navient from the student loan market.

Protecting Borrowers from Illegal Loan Practices: The CFPB has consistently taken action against private lenders and for-profit schools that engage in deceptive practices, ensuring borrowers are not left with fraudulent debts.

Advocating for Borrower Rights: Through its complaint system, the CFPB has helped thousands of borrowers resolve disputes, seek repayment options, and hold servicers accountable for errors and misconduct.

Dismantling the CFPB would deprive borrowers of one of their most powerful allies. Families cannot afford to be without this agency watchdog in an era of skyrocketing student debt.

We call on Congress and all elected officials to reject any efforts to weaken or eliminate the CFPB. Protecting Americans from predatory practices is not just good policy—it’s a moral imperative.
