Reunite Haitian American Families

President Barack Obama

Dear President Barack Obama:

Haitian-Americans, immigrant justice and human rights advocates have urged the creation of a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program for the past four years, ever since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake killed 250,000 people and left millions homeless. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has approved 110,000 visas including 16,000 for children yet, they remain on a wait list for up to more than 12 years - languishing in Haiti where their lives are at risk. President Obama, you can put an end to this now by instructing Jeh Johnson and the Department of Homeland Security to create and implement a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program.

Many have already demonstrated their support for an expedited reunification program including over 100 members of Congress – both Republicans and Democrats; 10 newspaper editorial boards, the civil and human rights community and most importantly, Haitian-Americans and all who believe in human rights and equal treatment for all.

Since the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital of Port au-Prince four years ago, hundreds of thousands of displaced people still live in tents and substantive reconstruction has yet to begin. Additionally, the imported cholera epidemic and other life-threatening conditions still threaten the health and well-being of the Haitian people.

We can no longer wait. A national movement is growing in support of a Family Reunification Parole Program for Haitians and their families. The time to legally reunite Haitian-Americans with their family members is now. Expedite this process and create the Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program. We know you can do this because there is precedence for it. You have re-approved the Cuban Family Reunification Parole Program twice since its creation in 2007.

Haitians contribute immensely to the social, cultural, political, and economic fabrics of the United States of America! Expediting these paroles administratively is smart, saves lives and helps Haiti whose recovery is in our national security interest, given its proximity to our shores.

Act Now Mr. President. After all, justice delayed is justice denied.
