Save the Rwenzori Mountains from Human Destruction and the Climate Crisis

The Government of Uganda, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA)

The Rwenzori Mountains are a vital water source and a unique cross-border ecosystem shared by Uganda and the DRC. They support rich biodiversity, agriculture, tourism, local livelihoods and the wider Great Lakes region.

However, the mountains are increasingly threatened by deforestation, timber and charcoal production, bush burning, unsustainable farming, overgrazing and soil erosion, while climate change is affecting snow, glaciers, water resources and biodiversity.

Urgent action is needed to protect and restore the Rwenzori Mountains before these threats cause irreversible damage to the environment and communities.

1. We want the Ugandan Government to strengthen the protection of Rwenzori Mountains National Park and stop deforestation, timber exploitation, charcoal burning and other destructive activities.

2. We want Uganda and the DRC to strengthen joint efforts to restore and protect the Rwenzori Mountains, involving local communities and addressing climate change.
