Like many small businesses across the United States, a number of independent Planned Parenthood nonprofits were awarded federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to help keep staff on payroll during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the SBA is now demanding that Planned Parenthood organizations give the loan money back. The agency says that Planned Parenthood health centers may not qualify for the PPP because of ties to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a national organization. That claim is demonstrably false.

Unsurprisingly, congressional Republicans have jumped in, calling on Attorney General William Barr to investigate 37 independent Planned Parenthood organizations.

This is a blatant ideological attack on Planned Parenthood. Each state and local Planned Parenthood organization is an independent nonprofit with its own funding and leadership structure. Given the facts, it is simply not possible for these organizations to have violated PPP loan size limits.

By attempting to take away health centers’ PPP loans, Republicans in Congress are also signaling that they have no problem with taking affordable health care away from many who need it. In a time where millions of people across the country are suffering and going without income, health care, and other basic needs, organizations like Planned Parenthood nonprofits are crucial to providing care and support for communities in every state.
