Tax the Ultra-Rich NOW!

Congress

Tax the Ultra-Rich Now (TURN), is a national campaign to raise awareness of the negative effects of extreme wealth inequality and mobilize voter support – especially in communities of color –to tax the ultra-rich.

As more than one million Americans have died and tens of millions have lost jobs and struggled to survive during the pandemic, approximately 700 US billionaires have watched their collective wealth skyrocket to more than $5 trillion. It doesn’t take billionaire Elon Musk’s hostile takeover of Twitter, space races, or corrupt Russian oligarchs to make Americans aware of how the unbridled wealth of approximately 150,000 US households – the top 0.1 percent – threatens the future of our democracy and deprives the public of critical investments in communities and the planet.

The TURN campaign will seize a tremendous opportunity to educate and mobilize voters around the huge concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the ultra-rich. And the American public is ready: As President Biden’s pollster, John Anzalone, explained in a February 2022 Impact Research memo, “raising taxes on the wealthy is more popular than virtually any other Democratic proposal.” Taxing the ultra-rich is popular with Democrats, Republicans and Independents, but the politicians need to be made to listen up. It’s time to make the ultra-rich less rich.

Official partners behind the educational and/or advocacy efforts of the TURN campaign include Other98, The Excessive Wealth Disorder Institute, Americans for Tax Fairness, Health Care for America Now, Inequality.org and Working America Education Fund.

-----

The wealthiest people in our country keep getting richer while working families struggle to make ends meet and the gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of us grows.  The nation’s 740 billionaires now control more wealth than the 65 million households that make up the bottom half of our economy. They use that wealth to buy off politicians and keep the system rigged in their favor while paying lower tax rates than firefighters, teachers, or nurses.

Congress must fix this unfair tax system by:

  • Raising taxes on the ultra-rich millionaires and billionaires to make them less rich.

  • Ending estate tax loopholes that allow the ultra-wealthy to hoard their wealth for generations.

Congress must act!  We need a more just tax system to build an economy that works for all of us.
