UofM Must Restore and Reimagine DEI – Sign the Petition to the Board of Regents!
The University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
Students deserve a university that protects diversity, equity, and inclusion not one that abandons it under political pressure. The recent closure of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) and the Office for Health, Equity, and Inclusion (OHEI) by the University of Michigan leadership undermines the institution’s core values and leaves marginalized students without essential resources.
From bias training to laptop lending, the DEI program supported students facing systemic challenges. With its dismantling, critical support systems like the LEAD scholarship, reflection spaces, and equity workshops have been stripped away. This decision sets back years of student-driven progress and disproportionately harms low-income and underrepresented communities.
We must demand that the University reinvest in DEI through a new model like UM-Flint’s HOPE initiative the Wolverine Hub of Opportunity, Persistence, and Excellence. Let us hold our leaders accountable and rebuild an inclusive university worthy of its motto: Leaders and Best.

The recent dismantling of the DEI program at the University of Michigan has stripped students especially those from marginalized and low-income communities of critical support systems necessary to thrive on campus. Programs like the LEAD scholarship, bias training, and laptop lending helped make our university more equitable and accessible to all.
We believe U-M must live up to its stated values and reinvest in DEI. We call on the Central Student Government to push for the creation of a new initiative modeled after the HOPE office at UM-Flint: the Wolverine Hub of Opportunity, Persistence, and Excellence. Let this be a student-driven revival of inclusive values on our campus.
Michigan must lead again not follow political tides and protect the future of all its students.
