Teach In. August 27, 9:15 AM - 10:00 AM , Prof. Stefan Sommer will speak on State of the Global Climate, focus Africa.

Stefan is Science Communicator, film producer, author, and public speaker. He is also founding Board member and speaker for the Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance and speaker for NAU’s Sustainable Ambassadors Program. Prof. Sommer is connected to NAU’s Department of Biological Sciences and Center for Adaptable Western La ndscapes, with expertise in community ecology, sustainability, climate change, and education outreach. Prof. Sommer writes also for the Arizona Daily Sun as author of the column “Spotlight on Climate” and served as executive producer of four award-winning PBS documentaries on biodiversity and habitat conservation.

Teach In. Round 1, August 27, 12:15 PM - 1:00 PM, Prof. Patrick Bond presents "Climate Justice seen from South Africa"

Prof. Patrick Bond, a political economist, will focus on exchange issues around BRICS. He is based at the University of Johannesburg, where he is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of the Centre for Social Change. His doctoral studies were at Johns Hopkins University, under David Harvey’s supervision. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry within President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and other policies. His best-known work is Elite Transition: From Apartheid to Neoliberalism in South Africa, but he has written or edited a half dozen books on the economy, environment and public policy, including Politics of Climate Justice: Paralysis Above, Movement Below.

Jackson is a Congolese peace and climate justice activist, human rights defender, and active member of Fridays for Future from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rooted in grassroots movements, he works alongside local communities and young people to amplify their voices, defend human rights, and advance climate justice. Through community organizing, advocacy, and mobilization, he highlights the deep connections between conflict, natural resource exploitation, and the climate crisis, while empowering communities to lead transformative solutions. His commitment is driven by a powerful vision: an Africa where peace, human rights, and climate justice become the pillars of a resilient, sustainable, and equitable future.

At the risk to his own life, Dr. Kisangani continues to speak up, "I support communities affected by armed conflict and environmental disruption. I’m certified by One Young World in hygiene promotion and actively involved in grassroots organizing. Through my work, I give voice to the forgotten victims of climate injustice and mobilize youth for a fair and inclusive ecological transition."

Lydia reviews how climate change threatens Africa's peace and development, and how youth are key Climate Peace builders. She urges support for youth actions for a sustainable future.

Lydia Leonard from Tanzania is a climate justice activist, Community Developer, and Peace Ambassador. She is the Founder of Limitless Mind Movement, working to empower communities, inspire youth action, and promote peace, resilience, and sustainable development.

Claudia Sumaili is a climate advocate and a peace builder from the DRC. She is passionate about environmental justice issues , youth leadership and community resilience.

Claudia will address plastic pollution in Africa : causes , consequences and possible solution .
Africa must not be the world’s plastic dumping ground, but rather a continent of sustainable green solutions

Activist Speakers, August 28, 11 AM to 12 PM, Atim Edith, "The EACOP Debate: Power,Resistance, and the Future of Climate Justice "

Atim examines the background of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), the key actors involved, and the environmental, social and climate justice concerns concerning the project. She explores howcommunities,  activists,and civil society organisations are organizing to protect rights, livelihoods and ecosystems while advocating for accountability and sustainable alternatives.
Atim Edith Labeja is from Uganda, by occupation lawyer and environmental activitist. Edith Labeja is the CEO oF Imara Binti Initiative, a climate Activist, FFF ActionNetwork, a human rights defender, board member at resilient 40, and PCJ. She has worked with women and girls , vulnerable communities,refugees who are affected by climate change .

Activist Speakers, August 28, 12:15 PM - 13:00 PM, Ianna Mallayka speaks on "Youth action, Tree Planting and Environmental Protection".

Ianna focuses on transforming local areas into cleaner, healthier and greener environments. Her effort is to empower residents to take charge of their surroundings, highlighting practical ways to manage waste, restore degraded landscapes and combat the ongoing challenges of climate change.

Mallayka Ianna is from Kenya. She is a climate activist recognized as Green Super Hero 2030 Ambassador and founder of Ianna Mallayka Environmental Organisation. She is a campaigner for #sports for trees and opposing plastic pollution across Lake Victoria and local communities. With others, she does clean ups and tree planting. She is passionate and inspired about innovation and social work especially that touches youth and girl empowerment, environment and climate.

Activist Speakers, August 28, 14:15 to 14:45, Rolf vom Dorp, Lund, Sweden, PCJ and FFF climate activist of 18 years, presents "10000 by 2027".

Rolf reviews the growing influence achieved by using petitions to connect with local residents to build relationships for organizing. Without contact with larger and larger population blocks, there can be no genuine grass roots driven change in Africa or elsewhere..

Rolf  stems from the US and resides in Sweden. He is actively involved in climate issues in N. Arizona through NAZCCA.org, in Lund Sweden with Fridays for Future, and in Africa through Peace and Climate Justice. His focus is digital organizing as a tool for grass roots organizing. He offers training courses in the use of FFF Action Network with its database of over 120 000.

Activist Speakers, August 28 15:00 to 16:15 PM, Mugerwa Mugisha Fred, director PEACE Foundation Bundibugyo, Western Uganda East Africa  presents “The experience of grass root organizations and communities affected by climate change, displacement and refugee migration.”

Fred Mugerwa will expound the topic to highlight that not-for-profit grass root organisations and communities on the front line of climate change, disaster, and displacement challenges burden the capacity of local organizations and rural communities. Yet international corporate agencies ringfence the funding circles and infrastructure. Systemic financing and legal consideration of climate refugees remain a challenge, causing rural communities, grassroots organizations, and indigenous communities to carry a bigger burden without financial resources. Climate action as a universal phenomenon, requires opening opportunities and unlocking collaboration potentials for collective action.

Mugerwa Fred is a humanitarian and rural transformation practitioner, human rights and planet activist with tested experience in refugee and disaster emergency response, nature responsive social permaculture, sustainable livelihood and environment project design and implementation. Founder and Chief Executive Director Permaculture Education, Action and Community Empowerment (PEACE) Foundation a not-for-profit humanitarian and development organization responding to and challenging the effects and causes of climate change, discrimination, poverty, hunger and malnutrition in western Uganda.

Speaker 9:00 to 9:45 August 29 Wicklife Ochieng, “Youth Voices in Climate Action: Leading Change for a Sustainable Future”

Wicklife Ochieng is a passionate youth advocate interested in climate action and community impact. He believes young people have an important role in creating sustainable solutions and driving positive environmental change. Through speaking and engagement, he aims to inspire others to take action for a more just and sustainable future.

This talk explores why youth voices are essential in addressing climate change and achieving climate justice. It highlights the challenges young people face, the actions youth are already leading, and the opportunities for greater involvement in decision-making. Participants will be encouraged to see young people not only as future leaders, but as leaders creating change today.

Training: Now on virtually every Saturday from June 6 on, at 10 AM East Africa Time, or 8 AM Kinshasa Time, we will go through issues of action network, starting with how to sign in when you gather names so as to qualify for coverage of travel expenses to Nairobi. The usual zoom link is https://https://us06web.zoom.us/j/5214259865. We will focus on How do I make a Report using Action Network to contact volunteers. The sign up and reminder link is https://actionnetwork.org/events/training-in-using-action-network-to-build-your-teams-throughout-africa/. This meeting explains why databases such as in Action Network are a key tool to organizing. Those who have missed prior trainings are welcome.
