Students' Climate Action Network
Students' Climate Action Network (SCAN)
We are a network connecting students, teachers and schools in Ireland calling for urgent action to prevent climate breakdown and ensure a just and sustainable future. The network aims to empower students to work together to achieve key demands for climate action, that have been decided through inclusive and participatory decision-making processes facilitated by students.
Network principles:
Student Voice - the network supports and amplifies the voices of secondary school students. The decisions and participation of students and young people is prioritised over that of adults. Teachers and schools are involved in order to support students.
Democracy and participation - we strive to reach decisions democratically between students and between schools. We use consensus decision making to maximise inclusion and participation of students and schools in our network.
Equality - all students and schools the network work together as equals and have an equal say decision making. All students are welcome to join and take part in our network.
Learning and skill sharing - We embrace student activism as learning and work towards an ideal of all our network activities being organised and run by students themselves. Wherever possible teachers strive to empower students to undertake roles and responsibilities themselves, with adult support where necessary. Tasks are shared and rotated between students to ensure that as many people as possible can learn new skills.
